Spiders can trigger terror, make us want to run the other way, like Little Miss Muffet.
As I was stitching these spiders, I tried to find positive associations or beliefs about spiders.
I grew up believing white spiders brought good fortune.
And according to 17 th c folklore, if you kill a spider that is on your clothing, you destroy the gifts it is weaving for you.
The origins of this belief perhaps come from the UK, where a very common spider, known as the money spider (Family: Linyphilidae) is said to bring good fortune when it lands on you.
After observing a spider who kept on trying until she finally managed to spin her web, Robert the Bruce went on to defeat the English at the Battle of Bannockburn.
I bring to you two spider leaf brooches to wear on your clothing, for luck, encouragement, and a reminder to try, try again.
Layers of fabrics and embroidery will enchant you. Two leaves of sumptuous upholstery fabrics in coppery-orange, backed with sturdy canvas, machine-embroidered veins, hand-embroidered spiders on each one, one white, one green. Finished with wire stems, for a realistic aspect.
Brooch clasps sewn on to the back of each leaf.
Leaf with white spider: 3.5” x 1.5” including stem. (9 x 4 cm)
Leaf with green spider: 3.25” x 1.25” including stem. (8.5 x 3.5 cm)
This industrious little creature, weaving positive vibes and good fortune into every beautiful web, is not just for Hallowe’en.
