Blue jewel scarab and philodendron leaves textile sculpture

Is it a tableau vivant? A still life? Is it vegan taxidermy? Read on, and then decide.

Meet Mr Jewel Scarab, just in, and exhausted after a night of flitting and flying, on a quest for that beguiling source of light.

Why, he was nearly nabbed by a collector last night and had he not escaped, he might well find himself at this very moment, part of some ghastly display, surrounded by others of the genus Chrysina, his abdomen pierced through by a pin.

Instead, he has found solace amongst some Philodendron leaves, seeking rest and perhaps even a meal, if these leaves taste as delectable as they look.

Product description:

Inspired by the shiniest of the coleoptera, the jewel scarabs, this beetle was fashioned from remnants of metallic blue fabric and black linen, stuffed with polyfil. He’s larger than life (all the better, considering the tiny size of the real ones) with legs of blue wire and fake leather, frosted blue bead eyes and a pleasing personality.

The Philodendron Birkin leaves, silky and velvety, with their smart stripes machine stitched in rayon threads, were cut from upholstery fabric catalogs, backed with cotton upholstery fabric remnants. The sturdy stems are made from cord, wire and, yes, more scraps!
Hand sculpted entirely from re-purposed fabrics in addition to threads, wire and beads, this is for you, the nature lover, protector of the planet and her tiniest creatures.

Dimensions and display:
The scarab body measures 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. He stands approx. 1.5 inches high. (9 x 5 x 3.5 cm)

As for the Philodendron, the largest leaf measures 8.75 x 5 inches (21 x 12 cm).
The medium-sized leaf, 8 x 4 inches (20 x 10 cm) and the small leaf, 5.75 x 3.5 (15 x 8.5 cm).

The leaves can be displayed horizontally, propped up by a rock, for example, or stood vertically in a vase. They are a bit heavy, so be sure to weight the inside of your vase with stones. The jar in the photos is not included.

Whether you showcase this sculpture in your curiosity cabinet, give it an honored spot on your mantelpiece, or set it up on your desk- - -
