I know lots of people who don’t like insects, they are creepy, annoying, they bite, etc. However, once you take a closer look, you can’t deny their intricate beauty. My favorites are beetles, and I was having a look at John Galliano’s spring collection 2004 for Christian Dior the other day on YouTube. If you’ve seen videos of this Egyptian-themed show, you’ll remember the amazing and often outrageous clothes, the models’ backward-bending poses, and even the masks. Many of the outfits had scarab accessories, hanging down from the ears, pinned the the chest, as belts, grouped together on necklaces.
I was so inspired that I just had to make some fabric scarabs, for the only thing that rivals my love of insects is my fascination with ancient Egyptian art. Shiny vintage fabrics, faceted bead eyes, with legs drawn in marker, at least for now, in the sketchbook phase.
I’d love to know: Which insects are your favorites? Leave a comment below.

A fear of messing up and wasting the viewers’ time came back each week, until I noticed that it felt fun to get on camera.
