One of my latest projects: small fabric cicada pillows or more like soft sculptures, since they have legs and eyes. When I say small, I mean compared to my 12″-13″ beetle pillows from last year. The cicada bodies measure 7″ long by 3.5″ wide. So of course they are much bigger than real cicadas! I’ve tried to render the daintiness and the elegance of real ones using shiny fabrics on top, remnants of sheer curtain fabric for the wings and glass beads for their eyes. Their larger-than-life size makes the beautiful details of these insects easier to see: the veins in the wings, the thin legs, the patterns on the body.

And as with all my insects, you can keep them around all year long, they won’t fly away!
